General

The population of Pakistan in 2005 was estimated by the United Nations at 162,420,000, which placed it at number 6 in population among the 193 nations of the world. In 2005, approximately 4% of the population was over 65 years of age, with another 42% of the population under 15 years of age. There were 106 males for every 100 females in the country. According to the UN, the annual population rate of change for 2005-10 was expected to be 2.4%, a rate the government viewed as too high. In 2002, the government initiated the Population Policy of Pakistan, which aimed to stabilise population growth by 2020 by lowering both the fertility rates and mortality rates. The projected population for the year 2025 was 228,822,000. The population density was 204 per km² (528 per mi²).

The UN estimated that 34% of the population lived in urban areas in 2005, and that urban areas were growing at an annual rate of 3.60%. The capital city, Islamabad, had a population of 698,000 in that year. Karachi, the largest city, had a population in excess of 12 million. Other cities with populations in excess of one million include Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Hyderabad and Peshawar.
